The European Commission (EC) has made a lackluster attempt to match the UK government’s ambitious digital communications investment of more than £1 billion ($1.25 billion) by 2020, with the launch of its own €500 million investment fund for broadband infrastructure across EU countries. This is great news for regions without a fiber line in sight outside of the capital cities, but we think the EC needs to up its game here, as this level of funding is hardly a drop in the ocean when accounting for all 28 EU member states.
