Qualcomm offshoot Gimbal has released the U-Series 5 Bluetooth beacon – a USB form factor implementation of its established beacon technology, and Gimbal’s smallest product. The low cost and battery-less device is targeted at developers looking to add beacon functionality to traditional devices. In one of our previous discussions with Gimbal, COO Kevin Hunter said that the company was developing a USB beacon that would find a home in retrofit friendly locations – where the necessary power supply is available to developers who don’t want to locate beacons to perform the inevitable battery swaps.
