The Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) driven originally by Comcast and Time Warner Cable (TWC) to enable IP migration for MSOs is becoming virtualized by pushing DOCSIS CMTS (cable modem termination system) and QAM closer to subscribers. Harmonic is the latest to bow to this trend by releasing its NSG Exo, a cable edge device that supports DOCSIS 3.0 functionality out of the box with edge QAM support coming later in 2014.
