Virtual reality has been a buzz word at every technology trade show this year, and at last week’s IBC, the broadcasting industry’s annual jamboree, even global satellite fleet operator SES jumped on the bandwagon. SES took advantage of the show to demonstrate the broadcast of VR content via satellite, in partnership with German research institute Fraunhöfer. The catch, though, is that the technology is still in its infancy, and the wait will be 3-5 years before its first commercial deployment – though this should align nicely with when the price of headsets at a level that appeals to the masses.
