Opinions are sharply divided on whether the unlicensed spectrum options for low power wide area networks (LPWANs) can survive now the cellular standard, NB-IoT, is being commercially deployed by mobile operators. Telia of Sweden is the latest of a string of operators which say they will not invest in technologies like LoRa, now that NB-IoT is here. Vodafone, which will launch NB-IoT services early next year, has been the most aggressive, claiming the LTE-based technology will “crush” rivals like LoRa.
