Some good news has come Samsung’s way in its long-running patents dispute with Apple in the US. The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the South Korean giant, scrapping a $399m damages bill in the latest episode – but surely not the last – of the hottest legal battle in tech. At the heart of this is the idea that instead of basing damages for patent infringement on the profit of an entire smartphone, the jury should have awarded fees based only on the profit on what was allegedly copied.
