Verizon and Ericsson provided one of the more dramatic 5G demonstrations to date, supporting a car navigated via a virtual reality video feed at the Indy 500 Speedway in Indianapolis last week. Ericsson’s North America CTO, Glenn Laxdal, told LightReading the demonstration “showed 5G in three dimensions”, achieving downloads at 6Gbps on a test car equipped with a 28 GHz radio and moving at 60 miles per hour. The raceway was fitted with four 28 GHz radios at 450-yard intervals around the track, using 64×64 antenna arrays. Ericsson engineer Bill Goodman in the passenger’s seat, and according to an Ericsson blog, there were more than 180 beams tracking to keep the connection between the radio and the car unbroken.
