Forget NFC, the big success stories in mobile payments have been SMS-based offerings in emerging markets, like Vodafone’s M-Pesa. This mobile money service may now expand into additional countries as its largest provider, Safaricom of Kenya, looks to move into new markets. Safaricom, Kenya’s largest MNO, has its sights set on Nigeria and Angola in order to diversify its revenue streams, at a time when it is facing regulatory scrutiny at home.
