In early January we discussed the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s report on data center power demand, with its dramatic forecast that power consumption would grow from 4.4% of US national electricity demand in 2023 to between 6.7%-12% by 2028. This is definitely one of the more dramatic and aggressive perspectives out there, a viewpoint which was also adopted by power markets in their forecasts, leading to the conclusion that further gas build out will be needed. After looking at the numbers, it may well be true that gas is needed for data centers – but only in the US case because its solar, wind, and transmission expansion is punching well below its pay grade and will continue to do so…
