CDN provider and cloud hyperscaler Akamai has unveiled two new cloud offerings ahead of NAB 2025, each claiming to challenge traditional cloud providers in media and in AI. The first is Akamai Cloud Accelerated Compute Instances, an entirely new compute category for the company enabled by video processing units (VPUs) from Netint Technologies. VPUs allow companies to perform specific video processing tasks way more efficiently than general-purpose chips, and in deploying Netint’s Quadra T1U modules, Akamai claims to be the first and only cloud provider to offer VPUs in the cloud.
