Apple and Ericsson have settled their high-profile legal battle over patents licensing and signed a new multiyear deal. Patent experts pointed to a good result for Ericsson, which will potentially generate significantly increased royalties at a time when the Swedish company is highlighting intellectual property as an important way to boost margins (see separate item). Wall Street analysts at Raymond James estimated, in a client note, that the agreement would lead to Apple paying licensing fees to Ericsson of about $100m per quarter, which would be sharply up on the $55m a quarter they calculated as the payments under the old deal, whose expiry triggered the litigation.
