Mexico’s 5G prospects remain hazy as AT&T starts deployment in two districts of Mexico City, while rival América Móvil still cannot nail a date for its launch after a year of demurring. The roll-out remains under the shadow of excessive spectrum prices which have stymied deployment and pushed back likely commercial launch dates. This issue has rumbled on for several years and led to push-back from the country’s Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), which in 2020 submitted proposals for reductions in the price of spectrum in bands reserved for 5G use, including the 600 MHz, L-band (1500 MHz), 3.3 -3.45 GHz and 3.45-3.6 GHz bands.
