There is a real danger that European airlines, by adopting “waste based” fuels going forwards, never make the final adjustment to hydrogen based fuels. But given that Airbus feels it can have hydrogen based flight ready by 2035, no sooner, that’s a long time for it to be shelling out on any kind of carbon taxation that applies to EU flights. Also it relies on other companies in other industries embracing hydrogen enthusiastically and putting in enough resource into hydrogen to see prices fall to an acceptable level in that time frame – or aviation will continue to get more and more expensive, a shrink as an industry.
