NTT DoCoMo of Japan will buy a 10% stake in KT Freetel of South Korea for about Won564.9bn ($557.4m), as both companies seek to extract benefits from exposure to each other’s markets. DoCoMo will purchase 20.2m shares in KTF, including 17.7m in new shares and the rest in treasury stock. As part of the alliance, the two cellcos plan to cooperate in developing wireless roaming services for customers in Korea and Japan, conduct joint marketing efforts and jointly develop W-CDMA handsets. KTF said the alliance will help the company speed up the adoption of WCDMA wireless services in Korea and boost its global competitiveness.
