Android devices in Europe could soon look almost unrecognizable as Google responded this week to the European Commission’s attempts to prize some of the search giant’s tentacles away from the smartphone ecosystem. Unfortunately, the plan has backfired catastrophically. The idea is to unbundle Android and therefore allow mobile device makers to build around the OS without being forced to take Google Search and the Chrome browser as pre-installed necessities. Google will now allow manufacturers to build ‘forked’ smartphones and tablets across the European Economic Area.
