RK Singh, India’s Minister for Power and Minister for New and Renewable Energy, has stated that his Ministry has received expressions of interest worth 20 GW for new solar module and cell production lines in the country. This is motivated by the increasing certainty that the government will impose a basic customs duty on solar imports. Speaking at the India PV Edge 2020 online conference, Singh claimed that this interest had arisen independently of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE)’s plans to subsidize borrowing on capital loans for manufacturers, under a yet-to-be-implemented ‘interest subvention’ scheme.
