Two silicon acquisitions last week highlighted the continued tumult in the semiconductor industry, though they took place at opposite ends of the industry scale. Intel has bought a mobile-focused graphics processor (GPU) specialist, Siru Innovations, to help it brace against AMD and Nvidia in the data center and in enabling new video experiences. Meanwhile MaxLinear has made a CPE play, buying Silicon Motion and its solid state device (SSD) expertise for some $3.8bn, while Intel is on something of an acquisition spree, as its new CEO Pat Gelsinger starts righting the perceived wrongs of his predecessors.
