For the first time in nearly 10 years, fans of the European Championship will not be watching the tournament’s soccer games in 4K. European soccer governing body UEFA—which organizes inter-European international competitions—decided earlier this year, prior to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final, that all future competitions would be produced in 1080p50 with single-layer HLG (hybrid-log gamma) HDR. This year’s UCL final was thus the first since 2014 to not be produced in 4K, a major rollback which would be difficult to ignore as anything other than the beginning of the end for the 3840p x 2160p version of UHD, not to mention 8K.
