The latest operator to announce plans for a 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service is India’s market leader, Reliance Jio, though it claims this will take a different approach from that of many MNOs. Mukesh Ambani, chair of Jio’s parent company Reliance Industries, announced the plan to offer Jio AirFiber, which he said would deliver fiber-like speeds to a WiFi hotspot device for the home or business. Jio is targeting 100m connections with its FWA service, over an unspecified timeframe, and this could have a significant impact on broadband penetration in the huge country, which has generally lacked high speed fixed-line broadband in many areas.
