German automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to inject fossil-free steel into its production lines from 2025. Following a $105 million investment into green steel start-up H2GS, not only does this add to the drive to decarbonize steelmaking, but it also points to hydrogen – rather than CCUS – as Europe’s primary option for doing so. For Mercedes, the announcement comes as part of its broader objective to reach carbon neutrality by 2039, by which time it aims for its vehicle fleet to be fully connected.
