Maybe Poland is finally coming round to clean energy. This week, its largest utility, PGE, announced that it would aim for 100% renewable energy by 2050, and would offload all of its coal assets. Not fully convinced by wind and solar, the country has started to hedge its bets with nuclear, after another deal this week with the US, that will see $18 billion spent on the technology. PGE announced on Monday that “within a decade, it will become a completely different company,” and will soon transfer all of its coal mines and power stations to a new state-owned entity as it focuses its attention of renewables, with ambition for this spin-off to occur by the end of 2021.
