Australia has the most solar power of any country relative to population, reaching 787 Watts per capita at the end of 2020, and it’s naturally also the first to reach certain milestones in the energy transition. Last year the state of South Australia briefly reached 100% solar power, mostly rooftop, and the national grid operator AEMO is having to become a trailblazer at integrating huge amounts of rooftop power – at a scale that causes demand to drop massively, posing a threat to grid stability. Another milestone is waste solar modules. Professor Majewski, from the University of South Australia, now predicts that 100,000 tons of solar modules will be discarded through to 2035.
