Qatar World Cup solar deal could generate 20% of country’s power

Qatar has approved an 800 MW solar project, the Al Kharsaah Solar Plant, to be built 80 kilometers west of the capital Doha. The project will be Qatar’s first utility-scale solar plant. Total and Marubeni Corp will jointly develop the project with the first 350 MW to come online in Q1 2021 and the remaining 450 MW to come online by Q1 2022, in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. During the event the number of people in Qatar will increase by 50%. Solar power will also be used to cool stadiums and even cooling fans in the helmets of construction workers.
