BP and Orsted have inaugurated a partnership in green hydrogen, with a 50 MW electrolyzer project set to be installed at BP’s Lingen Refinery in northern Germany in 2022. The initial stage of the project will use power from Orsted’s offshore wind farms to produce 9,000 tons of green hydrogen per year – displacing 20% of the refinery’s existing demand for grey hydrogen from natural gas. Longer term plans indicate that the site could host up to 500 MW of electrolzyers. The pair have applied for funding as part of the EU’s €10 billion innovation fund.
