UK energy giants SSE, National Grid and ScottishPower have agreed to build a ‘superhighway’ for electricity – the Eastern Link – which will run for more than 270 miles from two points in Scotland to the North East of England. The subsea HVDC cables will have a combined capacity of 4 GW, helping to support the UK’s ambition of powering all homes by offshore wind by 2040. Construction works are expected to start in 2024, following surveying that is already underway. Vestas has pulled in a 50 MW order for ERG’s Sandy Knowe project in the UK.
