Much of the excitement around low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites is focused on US firms, and the race to space between billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. But of course, China is also investing heavily in various kinds of satellite, and particularly in a LEOsat fleet that could extend 5G coverage. Chinese state media reports that the country’s most prominent new satellite operator, GalaxySpace, is planning to launch 1,000 LEOsats, initially for domestic broadband use, but eventually to compete in other parts of the world with SpaceX Starlink and others.
