Possibly the largest energy-related story over the past few weeks has been the cancellation of the Keystone XL oil pipeline – largely on environmental grounds that are likely to propagate and disrupt other fossil fuel infrastructure projects. Nord Stream 2 (NS2), a gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, could well be next up to the gallows, but any murmurings of environmentalism will be a façade for larger international disputes.
