China’s National Energy Administration reports that the country reached 3.35 GW of generation capacity as of end-2024, including solar 886 GW, wind 521 GW, almost as much combined as the 1,444 GW of coal and gas power. In June 2024, solar and wind combined to 1,180 GW and coal (without gas) had been surpassed, weighing in at only 1,170 GW. By the end of 2024, 15 provinces out of 33 had more renewables capacity than coal and gas – although admittedly, the coal utilization rate was up at 50%, more than double the capacity factor of wind and solar.
