The European Parliament has voted for the inclusion of emissions from the maritime sector over 5,000 tons in its emissions trading system (ETS) from the start of 2022, stating a target to cut ships’ average CO2 emissions by over 40% by 2030. As the EU looks to strengthen its carbon taxation policy, it is also expected over coming weeks that the rate at which the ETS limit falls will be increased from 1.74% to more than 2.2%, to achieve a 55% cut in emissions by 2030, up from the previous target of 40%.
