India is considering plans to retire its coal fleet in favor of renewables, according to Power Minister RK Singh. The country is currently the largest consumer of coal in the world, with coal-fired power stations accounting for more than half of the country’s 373 GW power generating capacity. By 2022, the country has stated targets to install 175GW of renewable power capacity and replace 40% of its energy needs with clean sources by 2030, although these are almost certainly overambitious.
