At a presentation given this week by Toyota it detailed its plans for making Electric Vehicles, stating a value of $13.6 billion (or ¥1.5 trillion) that it will spend on battery development. While this number was designed to attract headlines, it does little more than that, with questions being rebuffed over precisely when and where the money will be spent – CTO Masahiko Maeda made it clear that most of this was not R&D funding (which is about one third of the amount), but the ramp up to making cars with such batteries for more than 70 lines of vehicles.
