Vietnam plans to reduce its coal power generation by 6% in 2021, according to national utility EVN. This is enabled by 20 GW of recently installed solar and 600 MW of wind – which together now make up 30% of grid capacity. Of a total 260 TWh from all sources generated in 2020, coal accounted for 126 TWh, and will be reduced to 118 TWh this year. A reduction of 8 TWh a year is equivalent to switching off a 913 MW power plant which had been running full tilt 24/7.
