Xi Jinping has committed his country to reaching over 1,200 GW wind and solar by 2030, speaking at the UN Climate Summit. Believe it or nor this monumental figure could be viewed as something of a let-down, given that China already has 470 GW, and the existing rates of wind and solar development would need to change but little to reach 1,200 GW over ten years. However, Xi said ‘over’ 1200 GW – so 1200 GW is simply the baseline, and it’s entirely possible, thanks to continual cost declines and technological advances, this figure could be exceeded by a wide margin. Solar stocks rose in reaction to the statements, so they are certainly not viewing the announcement as a disappointment.…
