The divisive issue of how the 3GPP world seizes back the initiative in IoT (internet of things) networks will not be settled until the end of the year, at least. Although, at a critical meeting in Arizona last week, rival groups submitted their claims to provide a low power wide area (LPWA) standard for 3GPP Release 13, a decision will not be made until December. The two main rival proposals, Cellular IoT and Narrowband-LTE – led by Huawei and Ericsson respectively – will be considered by a new 3GPP work item, which will announce its decisions in December.
