Renault will be using second-hand battery packs form its electric vehicles (EVs) in both consumer and utility-scale electricity energy storage, in a trial with Powervault. Re-using EV batteries will provide more options for developers looking for cut price storage assets and accelerate adoption. However, we’re yet to be convinced that the process of re-harvesting the batteries makes economic sense for the automaker – due to the cost of repurposing the used batteries.
