After many false starts, Apple may finally be opening up its processor ecosystem and starting to cut some ties with Samsung. Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC has reportedly started to make the next generation quad-core A8 processor, which will go into new iDevices later this year, though Samsung is unlikely to be squeezed out of the picture altogether any time soon. Apple has been trying to reduce its reliance on Samsung, because of the two giants’ rivalry in handsets and in order to lower the risks of single-source procurement of a vital part.
