Some of the larger multinational operators are looking beyond their own user bases for opportunities in the smart home and smart car. Deutsche Telekom has followed AT&T in offering its smart home platform to carriers outside its own group. Dutch telco KPN has become the first company from outside the DT family to adopt the German giant’s Qivicon platform, and is using it to roll out smart home services under the brand ‘KPN Smartlife’. The deal is interesting because DT has its own subsidiary, T-Mobile, in The Netherlands, but has nevertheless partnered with KPN, which has higher market share and a fixed/mobile business.
