With Cypress Semiconductor’s new Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) module, we might be seeing the potential capabilities of the next iteration of Bluetooth. Expected to be included in the next standards release, later this year, will be mesh networking profiles, a doubling of the bandwidth to 2Mbps, thanks to larger packet sizes, as well as a quadrupling of the range to 120 meters, using new frequency modulation. The Cypress module claims a range around three times greater than the target set by the BLE standards body, Bluetooth SIG. The EZ-BLE PSoC (programmable SoC) XT/XR CYBLE-224110-0x module measures 9.5mm x 14.5mm in a 32-pad footprint.
