On the eve of last week’s IBC show in Amsterdam, the global gathering of the broadcast industry, Nokia crashed out of the IP video business, selling it to the Canadian Volaris group. Volaris will recreate the Velocix content delivery network (CDN) brand that was acquired in 2009. This is the third departure this year of a major network vendor from IP video businesses, following similar moves by Ericsson and Cisco. There are two factors at work. First, large equipment vendors are not the right environment to have a ‘vision’ about the future of video and try to sell it both internally and to major customers.
