Airlines in Europe are campaigning for environmental taxes to be reconsidered, with the coronavirus applying downwards pressure throughout the sector. Bailout packages are unlikely to include such short-term measures and could even come with conditions that emissions have to be cut in order for airlines to qualify and heavy investment in biofuels may be necessary for their survival. The new objections follow a continued battle between the airline sector and the European Union, with plans in place to tax jet fuel based on carbon emissions and other governments imposing levies to slow the growth in air traffic.
