Among the operators which supported AWS’s Wavelengths launch last year were Verizon, SK Telecom, KDDI and Vodafone, and the last of these is starting to put the combined 5G/edge value proposition, enshrined in that platform, to practical work. The operator has implemented a live multi-access edge computing (MEC) testing capability on its public LTE and 5G infrastructure in the UK, backed with data storage and processing from AWS. This 5G/MEC combination is already being used in a number of industrial IoT pilots in the UK, with similar deployments due for completion in Germany soon.
