One of the most important initiatives in the nascent RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) platform is the Open Networking Foundation’s (ONF’s) SD-RAN project. Though this will take the original RIC specifications from the O-RAN Alliance as its starting point, it will offer a fully open source implementation, and it claims it will further in making a fully disaggregated open RAN deployable. Critics of O-RAN claim the ONF effort is also more operator-driven, and more democratic, than the O-RAN project.
