Cement production was responsible for nearly 8% of global emissions in 2021, with China producing around 2,400 megatons in 2020, over half of the world’s demand. This was due largely to its massive residential and industrial infrastructure spending. Cement demand is projected to continue increasing in the next decade as developing countries spur infrastructure demand in sturdier residential homes and industrial complexes. This will be particularly pronounced in countries like India and Indonesia as these countries stand to benefit the most from China’s ageing demographics.
