ArcelorMittal will receive $492 million from the Spanish Government to replace its coal-burning facilities at its plant in Gijon, with hydrogen equipment in order to produce green steel. The two blast furnaces will be replaced by a 2.3 Mton direct reduced iron unit that is capable of using green hydrogen to reduce iron ore, and a 1.1 Mton hybrid electric arc furnace. Given that the steel major is investing $1 billion into a coal-based plant in India, the jury is still out on whether the company is greenwashing or not.
