Battery materials Lithium carbonate costs have continued a slow increase after their significant jump in early May, but the increase has slowed significantly since the jump from recent lows of 185,000 RMB to 300,000 RMB ($26,000-$42,000). The increase comes from Chinese NEV demand returning from lows seen following temporary subsidy removal and the total removal of Covid-19 lockdown policies causing much of the urban Chinese population to voluntarily isolate – hurting automotive demand significantly. The country’s NEV subsidies have since been reinstated and rumors are circulating of a supported extension for up to 4 years to prevent the yoyoing of NEV demand we have historically seen at year-end.
