Offshore hydrogen is gaining momentum in Europe as French company Lhyfe has announced the production of Europe’s first offshore green hydrogen, with a 1 MW electrolyzer connected to a floating wind turbine off the coast of Le Croisic in northwest France. Lhyfe’s pilot project, called Sealhyfe, marks a significant step in offshore hydrogen production. Although Lhyfe claims to be the world’s first offshore hydrogen production pilot, Chinese state-owned wind turbine Dongfang Electric produced green hydrogen from seawater at an offshore wind farm in Fujian province slightly earlier. Lhyfe plans to conduct tests comparing offshore and onshore production conditions using a separate electrolyzer.
