Clean and sustainable hydrogen aviation is closer than you think. Dale Vince, the founder of Ecotricity, a UK-based renewable energy supplier, has announced plans to launch the world’s first hydrogen-powered airline in 2024. There is a small caveat though. Hydrogen will only come into the equation from 2025. In a slightly odd business strategy the airline operator will run kerosene planes for its first year of operation and only then switch to 100% green hydrogen. Part of the reasoning for this is due to the hydrogen electric powertrains, developed by ZeroAvia, that Ecotricity will use for its aircraft taking some time to certify for commercial operation.
