Last week we spoke with Balint Horvath, a representative for Netherlands-based novel flow battery startup Aquabattery to get a better idea of its saltwater-based flow battery technology’s capabilities, and to gauge where the company sits within the ever-growing flow battery industry. Founded in 2014, Aquabattery changed track from a combination saltwater/freshwater electrolyte to solely saltwater in 2017, motivated by the realization that it had superior power and capacity characteristics compared to the hybrid mix. It currently employs around 16 people, having expanded in recent years. Horvath says that the company has already completed 3 research-scale pilot projects.
