It’s difficult to pinpoint whether hydrogen-fired power plants (HFPPs) will play a major role in the decarbonization of the global electricity grid or not, simply because it’s unclear whether there is truly a strategic challenge which requires them as the solution. The only question mark arises when we start talking about alternatives, which so far are also dubious. Other green, long-duration dispatchable power sources may exist and even dominate in future, and with higher efficiency than hydrogen-fired plants, but so far these are still few and far between. As such, can we blame Germany for issuing a tender worth €16 billion for 10 GW of HFPPs? Until alternatives become available, we can only analyze the impact these plants would have…
