Portuguese prosecutors have filed to annul the environmental permit for Savannah Resources’ lithium mine in Barroso, Northern Portugal, as it looks to uphold a previous lawsuit filed by a local Portuguese municipality aiming to prevent Savannah from developing the mine. If allowed to continue operations, the mine would be Europe’s largest active lithium mine when realized, contributing a significant proportion of the EU’s goal to domestically source 10% of the bloc’s lithium demand. The project would also go some way to reducing both the bloc’s dependence on outside sources for its critical mineral needs while significantly reducing the environmental impact of importing lithium from either China, Australia, or South America.
